The New York City Opera House

New York City Opera has always been a sanctuary for American opera. The work of American composers has comprised approximately one third of the company's repertory over the years. Nurturing American operatic expression, shaping an American aesthetic, City Opera has adopted several homegrown works as signature pieces, including Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, Douglas Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Leonard Bernstein's Candide. *Located on 20 Lincoln Center
New York, NY 10023

Some Current Shows:

LYSISTRATA

2005
Music by Mark Adamo
Libretto by the composer (after Aristophanes)

Created in 411 BC, Aristophanes’s play Lysistrata is to this day one of the greatest—and funniest—political spoofs. The bawdy satire about marriage and other armed conflicts revolves around a group of wives who employ a most unusual weapon—a sex boycott—to end an age-old war between Athens and Sparta.

Sung in English with English supertitles
2 hours, 25 minutes including 1 intermission

LA BOHEME
1896
Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica

With no heat, little money for rent, and dwindling inspiration, four young artists are struggling to survive a winter in Paris. But when a lovely girl named Mimì knocks on their door, she reignites one bohemian’s creative and romantic impulses. Yet like all things, this time must ultimately come to an end, taking with it a most beautiful love and life.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles
2 hours, 24 minutes including 2 intermission

CARMEN

1875
Music by Georges Bizet
Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy

The sultry gypsy Carmen bewitches and seduces men—then discards them as easily as she does the cigarettes she makes. Her latest conquest, the soldier Don José, struggles to accept her fickleness. But when she leaves him for the handsome toreador Escamillo, the soldier’s passion turns deadly. The fatal attraction reaches its peak in a shocking confrontation outside the bullring gates.

Sung in French with English supertitles
3 hours including 2 intermissions
